Making my first dollar through writing as a freelancer wasn’t that easy, but it was so cool seeing what I do pay off in a little way.

Yeah, it was my first $200 from writing as a freelancer and definitely won’t be my last. This amount might be way below your pay grade, but this is actually was a huge milestone for me as a freelance writer in 2020.

I’m sharing this because I know at least 100 different viewers will benefit from this short testimony. So, stay glued, and I promise to keep it short and simple.

How it all started…

It all started back in 2019 when I interned at Data Science Nigeria as a Data Analyst Intern. Throughout my work hours with Data Science Nigeria, I had the opportunity to meet and learn new skills from top industry experts worldwide.

So, at the end of the 9th week at Data Science Nigeria, my supervisor Wuraola Oyewusi directed me and my colleague Bamigbade Opeyemi to write on any python or machine learning related topics that happen to fall on a Thursday afternoon to be submitted the next day(Friday).

My first attempt writing about what I love doing was weird and so scary, but over time, I got it all done. The whole post took me about 7 hours straight.

Here’s the link to the first article:

The post was reviewed and first edited by my supervisor Wuraola Oyewusi, later published on medium.com. I moved on to what was next in my career then.

To my greatest surprise, I got a mail from Team AV stating that they really like the post I wrote and would love to publish it on their page and also write consecutively in my own free time.

That was the best news of my life at that instance; without waiting, I did the needful, and I became a writer for Team AV.

So, I wrote a series of posts afterward.

Moving on…

April 2020, I open a freelancer account on freelancer.com as Data Scientist | Programmer | Writer.

freelancer.com

I started with coding projects in python and data science-related for weeks; then, the following week was so dry I couldn’t get a project from any client.

On that faithful evening, surfing through the available projects, then I saw this:

freelancer.com

I wrote my proposal and got a reply from Joseph McCray, the project owner, with no hesitation.

Listen, guys, the main reason I got hired was that I referred Joseph McCray to my medium post showing what I have done and what I can still do.

Take a look at my proposal:

freelancer.com

Yeah, Yeah the proposal isn’t that professional, but it still got the attention it required.

Literally, all 10 posts took me about 3 weeks to complete, and I got paid immediately after the job was completed.

Thanks, Joseph McCray.

I wrote this post because many beginners looking to make a living through writing find it difficult, which is really not meant to be.

All you need to do in earning your first $$$ bill are these three things below:

  • Highlight the things you love doing(i.e., you find so much comfort in doing them)
  • Look for related articles about those things.
  • Write your first 600 words about any of the things.
  • Publish it
  • Repeat all steps over and over again.
